WHO published a list of the most dangerous bacteria and presented an urgent call for new biocides and antibiotics in February 2017. The dire situation of resistant and resilient bacterial strains is a global threat. The urgency of the situation requires swift actions, because the pipeline of the development of new antimicrobials and antibiotics has waned within last decades. Overuse and misuse are part of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) problem, while sustainability remains unmet due to the demand of multiple mechanisms of action and proper broad-spectrum efficacy.
Most of the current antimicrobials are decades old and synthetic, ranging from quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) to antimicrobial polymers (such as biquanidines) and phenols. One of the unitive factors among synthetic antimicrobials is their scarce number of mechanisms of action. Once a bacterium is subjected to sublethal amounts of antimicrobials due to inadequate efficacy it can generate resistance via mutations. Multiple mechanisms of action will hinder the formation of resistance among bacteria, because the number of the required mutations will higher alongside with different mechanisms of action.
To address the issue of AMR and sustainable antimicrobials, Nolla Antimicrobial has developed a silver polymer technology with superior broad-spectrum efficacy in combination with multiple mechanisms of action. Nolla technology was tested against the five most dangerous bacteria of the WHO top 10 bacteria list:
- carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacteria baumannii and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
- carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae
- vancomysin-resistant Enterococcus faecium
- methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
The results showed Nolla Silver Polymer’s supreme efficacy against all of the multidrug-resistant strains.
Importantly, the bactericidal (MBC) performance of Nolla polymer was found with just 2.9 ppm of silver against all of the top 5 bacteria except for Acinetobacteria baumannii which required 5.85 ppm of silver. Measurements were carried in vitro by Microchemlab (www.microchemlab.com) and water was used as the carrier.
